Gathering of Old Men Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
This is a story that had many different themes and narrators throughout the book. It has racial prejudice and
joining as a community.
The story takes place on a plantation in Louisiana. One of the plantation workers , Beau Baton, has
been murdered. Candy Marshall is the owner of the plantation and discovered Beau's dead body outside of
Mathu's house. Candy believed that her foster father, Mathu, killed Beau. She confessed to murder to protect
him. In order to confuse the Sheriff, Candy gathered local men with shotguns and empty shells to Mathu's
house, with the idea that the local Sheriff will not be able to solve the crime. Seventy and eighty year old
men, brought their shotguns and was prepared to confess to murder. The local black men were prepared to
confess to murder because of the crimes Beau committed in the past. They believed Beau raped a sister, had a
son die for crime he didn't commit and a brother killed for beating a tractor in a race.
Most people at the plantation waited on a local Cajun, named Fix, who was known to lead lynch mobs
again......
