Gender is term that individuals use to refer to themselves; boy or girl. In the United States from a
very young age we know which gender we are. Parents may try to avoid the sex terms for why we are a boy or a
girl until we can grasp the concept of having different parts. Socialization is the process whereby an
individual learns the value systems, beliefs, behavioral norms, and personality attitudes of a specific
culture. Gender socialization is how we learn what is "normal” for each gender. So off what do we base our
knowledge of and differentiation between? Consumer items are a major determining contributor to the separation
and generalization of gender roles.
I visited three department stores and explored the boys and girls sections of clothing and toys. First
I went to Target in Blackstone Valley, Babies R US in Blackstone Valley and then Walmart off route 146. My
findings in these storms all generally showed the same. Exploring the girls clothes sections there were
