Hamlet analysis: Illusion vs. Reality Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Reality is often an illusion. What the eye sees is not always what it should believe. This is especially true in Shakespeares play Hamlet, where most major characters put on a false visage to hide their own secret interests and intentions. Throughout the play, Hamlet must encounter an excessive amount of what "seems” like reality while he tries to decipher the truth. His encounters with Claudius and the ghost of his father, as well as his own inner existential turmoil, depict the conflict between illusion and reality. This ongoing conflict plagues not only Hamlet, but everyone close to him and in the end causes most of them their lives. Ultimately, Hamlet comes to the realization that his selfish inability to act affects not only him, but everyone around him. On a more broad scale, he realizes that the more delayed a task is, the more problems are created that could have been avoided. The conflict between illusion and reality begins with the ghost. Two sentinels standing watch convince the doubtful Horatio that a ghost has appeared before the cas......
