Jane Austen uses her novel Pride and Prejudice as a medium to explore her feelings concerning the subject of marriages, love and relationships. Throughout the context of her novel, Austen reveals her views and opinions about love and marriage primarily through the various characters in the novel allowing readers to perceive the differences between marriages that are based on love and those that are grounded on convenience. The portrayal of these differing concepts clarifies to the reader that Jane Austens concluding beliefs on this matter is that a marriage is only acceptable when there is a genuine connection between the couple involved. Without love, not only is the marriage unsuccessful, the life that follows shortly after the marriage is also very disagreeable and misfortunate. Austen deems a marriage inadequate if it transpires chiefly for reasons that include: gain of wealth or status, pleasing society and settling for a companion in fear of not being able to find another partner.
