Similarities and Differences Between Tokugawa Japan and the Russian Tsardom Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Within the time period from 1500 A.C.E. to 1800 A.C.E., both Russia and Japan developed absolutist attributes, with the Tokugawa Shogunate in Japan and the Russian Tsardom. Although these two states have differ more in terms of religious views and their reactions to Western Influence, their leaders used similar methods to exert their power onto the people and control the government. Japan and Russia differed significantly in their religions. Japan adopted the concepts of neo-Confucianism, while Eastern Orthodox Christianity was deeply intertwined into the Russian Tsardom. Russian Tsars did not wish to continue the practice of religions that remained after Mongol rule and the Muscovy, neither did they wish to practice the Eastern religions. Instead, they established an Eastern Orthodox Church that people would follow, and the state can control, in turn controlling the people. The Tokugawa Shogunate, however, adopted the more strict, structured, and rigid teachings of neo- Confucianism.
