Culture is defined as the set of shared attitudes, values, goals, and practices that characterize an institution, organization, or a group of people (Merriam Webster, 2011). Madeline Leininger believed that in order to provide competent nursing care, an understanding of cultural differences should be exercised. She was engaged in a study of child psychology when she realized that the children of different cultures behaved in ways unique to the culture in which they were (Leininger, n.d.). Leininger did not specifically address the nursing metaparadigm, but her theory relates to it very well. The four concepts in the nursing metaparadigm are what transcultural nursing is about.
