Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass. By Frederick Douglass Douglass's experiences as a slave included violence, inhumanity, and cruelty from the time of his conception as the result of the rape of his mother by her white master to the cruel treatment he faced at the hands of his various masters. Douglass and other slaves were systemically denied basic human rights and comforts - as an infant he was separated from his mother, in his belief to prevent them from forming familial bonds. In the 'land of the free,' where 'all men are created equal,' slaves like Douglass were treated as little more than animals, as stated We were all ranked together at the valuation. Men and women, old and young, married and single, were ranked with horses, sheep, and swine.At this moment, I saw more clearly than ever the brutalizing effects of slavery upon both slave and slaveholder (pg 66).
