In 1941 Aristotle presented a cognitive theory of emotions, focusing on the function of physiological processes as an
important aspect of emotions (Power , 2008). Since then, a lot of work has been done to uncover the relation between
cognition and emotions. However, there is still a great inagreement on the matter, and on which of the two that aid
rationality. Thus, this opens up to further investigation for a better understanding, which is the purpose of this paper.The
paper will look at the relation between emotions and rationality, with the main focus being on how emotions with or without
cognitive mediation might contribute to our rationality.
The following questions will be answered:
1. What is emotion and what part has cognitive mediation been assigned to have in emotions?
2. What is rationality?
3. What role has the faculty of emotion for the more conventional mechanisms of rationality to function?
