Studies show that the average American child will watch about 21 hours of television in a week, this is at least 50% more than the time they will spend on any other after school activity, including homework, being with friends, or reading. By the age of 18, they will have seen about 16,000 murders and 200,000 acts of violence portrayed; and with increasing video-cassette sales and rentals, pay-per-view and cable TV, video games and interactive online media, young people will have greater access to media with violent content than ever before. The harmful influential impact of violence in the media reflected upon young children in cognitive developmental stages, increases the chances that violent, aggressive behavior will develop by the time they become teenagers or young adults. Many children experience a strong overlap in what they perceive as reality and what they see on the screen.
