Marx had great scorn for the peasants as he believed that the very conditions of the labour and the isolation it brought would prevent them from seeing themselves from seeing themselves as an oppressed class. Without class consciousness the peasants would never be a revolutionary force. Marxists had always thought of themselves as representing the most advanced, developed sectors of society. Their base of support was supposed to be the industrial workers, especially those in the largest factories. The peasants were uneducated and technologically primitive; with each family a separate economic unit the peasant economy provided no natural basis for united political action. Few Marxists expected that the peasants could do more than become junior partners in the revolution, following the lead of the industrial workers.
