Social Satire in Flatland Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In Edwin Abbott’s Flatland, the reader is taken on an adventure into a world of shapes and new ideas. Flatland is a two-dimensional world that is populated by figures of many shapes and sizes. To these two-dimensional creatures, everything appears to be a line. The creatures tell each other apart by feeling each other or by making use a fog like haze that exists in many parts of Flatland. In this world, the women are straight lines and the men are polygonal figures whose rank is based upon the number of sides he possesses. Those in Flatland who do not fit into a social class are looked down on, sent off to prison, or given a job that is highly undesirable.The overall story of Flatland revolves around a lawyer who has the shape of a Square. This Square has noticeably more intelligence than the others around him. One day while talking to his highly admired hexagonal grandson, the Square was presented with the question of a third dimension. This idea baffled the Square and he immediately yelled at his grandson telling him that such an idea was absurd. Later that night, the Square foun......
