The Worth of Organic Food Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In contrast to high-tech, agribusiness methods, organic farming systems aim to raise crops and animals without recourse to artificial or chemical means, and to protect and improve soil fertility over time (Tudge 40). The value of organically grown food is not monetary but environmental as it claims to be less polluting and harmful than conventional farming (Tate 16). The reason for this is three fold: the improvement of soil fertility, the use of the natural nitrogen fixation cycle, and the exercise of crop rotation make this possible (Tudge 41, van Straten 12). These three systems are not new in principal but rather they return agriculture to the roots of farming when the environment was not a hindrance but a blessing to be cared for. Organic farmers avoid the use of pesticides and artificial nitrogen fertilizers, instead preferring to encourage natural predators of pests that threaten their crops; for example, they introduce ladybugs to kill aphids (Cully 36).
