Unloved, Unwanted for simply being Jane Eyre The central theme of Charlotte Brontë’s book Jane Eyre is Jane’s relentless quest for love and affection. To reach this goal, she needs to overcome her inadequacies, such as her lack of accomplishments, and her need for acceptance. By exploring Jane’s quest, I will examine her successes and failures and determine whether she is ultimately able to secure her prize. As a little girl growing up in Gateshead, Jane finds no one to love except her ragged doll. She yearns for love and friendship. This craving mounts until replete with longing she declares: “You think I have no feelings and that I can do without one bit of love or kindness; but I cannot live so…” (45). To remain in Gateshead meant that she would never be loved or accepted, so following this outburst, she requests to be sent off quickly to school(46). It is as though she is saying: “I cannot find love here; let me out of these gates so I may find it elsewhere” Charlotte Brontë uses a pun by referring to the place as “gateshead” to deliberately and directly indicate ......
