Summary In June of 1812, Napoleon crossed the passage of the Niemen with 500,000 men and entered Lithuania. Within a month, Napoleon had conquered Lithuania virtually uncontested, and set his eyes upon Moscow. For Napoleon and his armies, the month of June and its easily won conquests were not a precursor for the days to come, rather, the beginning to a long arduous campaign that would end quite disastrously for France. M. de Fezensac writes about the role he played within the campaign of 1812 in his book Journal de la campagne de Russie en 1812. Fezensac’s book is not a book written by an author who set out to write a historical narrative engulfing the entire campaign of 1812. It is stated in the introduction that Fezensac had no intentions of this sort, rather, Fezensac wanted to write about his experiences within the campaign so family and friends could understand the toils and hardships.
