In the time of Shakespeare, 16th century, most people believed in witchcraft. If anything was unusual or went wrong then it was blamed on witchcraft or the supernatural, for example if a child fell ill then witchcraft would be blamed or also if the harvest failed then witchcraft would be blamed. The weather would also be blamed on the supernatural.
The drama Macbeth written by Shakespeare would contain witchcraft, as it would have been believed in at that time.
The use of witches has been used in the play as normal life. In the drama there are three witches that play a large role in the script. In the story the witches appear in three scenes. The first time we meet the witches is upon the heath. The second time we see them is when they are planning to meet Macbeth to tell him the three apparitions. The final time we meet the witches is when Macbeth returns to the witches having been made king of Scotland.
In act1 scene 1, the setting is in a desolate place, isolated, empty with thunder and lightening to set the scene for the entrance of the witches.
