2. How does Easy Rider fit into the category of Classical Hollywood Cinema? What ideaology/ies do you think the film promotes? Can we call this a Western? I think Easy Rider best fits into the category of “New Hollywood” films, and helps abolish and put to end the era of Classical Hollywood cinema with its indie film production and ideologies. The most prominent point that dishevels the archetype of classical Hollywood film is the ending of Easy Rider; Americans were used to seeing a cause and effect type plot drawn out in sequential order for the character, whose goals are completed by the end of the film, tying up all loose end and making for a very clean concise ending. The famous last words of Peter Fonda personify this ending “We blew it”, they had lost sight of their freedom and come to the realization that they were only helping destroy their country. The succeeding movement of actions and circumstances toward the protagonist’s goal was left behind with Classical Hollywood cinema, and a more meandering, subjective plot took its place.
