The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne is a literary masterpiece that captivates and inspires readers and viewers to this day. This can be attributed to the powerful character development of the heroin, Hester Prynne. As we progress through the trials and tribulations of this Puritan woman’s life, it becomes extremely evident that she is a feminist far before her time. Hawthorne addresses the issue of feminism before the term was coined, an era where and aggressive woman of her nature would be highly controversial bordering the lines of social taboo. Hawthorne writes of female abuse on a social, humanitarian and spiritual level during which time the woman’s role was strictly as a “care giver” and soul purpose to be the “barer of children.” Hawthorne exposes the audience to several emotions throughout the story focusing strongly on the basic rights of humans, women and men alike. The Scarlet Letter not only foretells of feminist issues, but it also demonstrates the ignorance of society towards the woman’s role in every day life.
