He woke up; there was excruciating pain all over his body. The smell of burning plastic and metal was everywhere. He stood up and inspected the wreck of his plane; he knew he was lucky to be alive. Fortunately the only really damaged parts were the nose and tail; the cargo hold was relatively intact.
His name was John Veldsman he had been flying for SAAF for 20 years and had been through some rough times. He had been flying a mission into Angola to transport arms and ammunition to the soldiers fighting on the front line. The last thing he could remember was a warning light in the cockpit and the cockpit filling up with smoke; then he passed out. He was thrown out of the cockpit as the plane hit a tree and lay on the ground until he woke up.
As he salvaged everything he could use, he found the rescue beacon. It had been torn up during the crash landing. It would be a long time before anyone came looking for him so he knew he would have to find his own way to safety.
