Symbolism in “The Masque of The Red Death” “The Masque of The Red Death” is a story filled with symbolism. Edgar Allan Poe uses vivid images of texture, color and objects to show man’s desire to overcome death. “The Masque of the Red Death” is a story of human denial and struggle with death, especially among the wealthy. Poe uses such words as devastation, pestilence, fatal, hideous, horror of blood, sharp pains, profuse bleeding, scarlet stains – to describe the horror of death caused by the plaque of “The Red Death.” The first symbol in the story is the name of the prince, Prince Prospero. The last name is a sign of wealth and prosperity. Prince Prospero symbolizes the optimist who is defiant and furious. Prospero believed that death could be evaded, if not escaped entirely, by boarding the doors and windows to keep the plague at a distance. Showing no mercy for his people dying in an epidemic, Prince Prospero entrenches himself in his abbey and leads a life of feast and fun.
