1984 Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

A vivid portrait of what frightening techniques a totalitarianism government might use to control its subjects is painted for us in the pages of George Orwell’s novel, 1984. As the novel opens, Orwell introduces us to the main character, Winston, who describes the society he lives in which everywhere he goes, the Party watches him through telescreens, and everywhere he looks, he sees Big Brother. The Party controls everything in Oceania from its history to its language. We come to understand, however, that Winston feels perturbed by the control of the government which prohibits any expression of individuality and free thought. After coming into contact with a fellow worker, O’Brian, in the Ministry of Truth, Winston learns that he too hates the Party and eventually educates them about the Brotherhood who secretly works against the Party. We later discover that O’Brian was a party spy and Winston and his secret, illegal lover, Julia, are taken to the Ministry of Love where they are tortured into feeling nothing for each other. Winston now accepts the Party completely and has learne......
