The Impossible Union of Asrtophil and Stella Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The sixteenth century was a time of scientific, historical, archaeological, religious and artistic exploration. The attention was into the depths of the human psyche and it was up to the artists and poets rather than the priests and scholars to examine and mirror these internal landscapes. The first of England's significant poetic period began in 1485 and lasted to 1625 and like most poetry its themes were based around love. The type of love portrayed in this poetry was courtly love, this being a type of love in which the man was overwhelmed by love for a woman. Sidney was praised by those of his generation as the courtier, the man who is successful in the social, political, and aesthetic qualities. One of the first important artistic creations witnessed by the Elizabethans was Sidney's sonnet sequence called Astrophil and Stella, a variation on Petrarch's sonnet system.
