A Brief History of Percussion It is true to say that rhythm is the most basic instinct we have. Even before we are born we have been subjected to the rhythmic beating of our mothers heart and when we are born our own heart keeps a steady rhythm whether we notice it or not. We learn to walk usually in some form of rhythm and most of us can clap our hands in time to music even though some people insist on clapping on the on beat to popular music, jazz or rock etc. Most races have drums or some form of drum which has in the past been used, and in some instances still is used, for ceremonial occasions and celebrations. In some cases the young male is required to make his own hand drum when reaching a certain age before he can be initiated into the exalted circle of adults. He is also expected to play the drum during the ceremony. The "Talking Drum" or "Message Drum" was used in some countries for sending messages and warning of impending danger etc. These drums were made by hollowing out a large log.
