Titian: The Life of an Artist Titian, whose name in Italian is Tiziano Vecellio, is believed to have been the greatest Venetian artist of the sixteenth century. Titian is known above all for his remarkable use of color; his artistic approach was highly influential well into the seventeenth century. He is one of the key figures in Western art and contributed to all of the major areas of Renaissance art, painting altarpieces, portraits, mythologies and rural landscapes with figures. Titian was born north of Venice in the small alpine village of Pieve di Cadore, not far from the Austrian border. His exact date of birth is unknown though he is believed to have been born between 1477 and 1487. Titian himself wrote a letter to Philip II in 1571 that he was over than ninety-five years old, which would make 1477 his year of birth. Modern scholars however prefer to advance the date to approximately 1487. In about 1498 at the age of ten, Titian and his older brother Francesco were sent to Venice to the workshop of mosaic artist Sebastiano Zuccato to begin their training as painte......
