“My Papa’s Waltz”: Theodore Roethke’s personal story Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Waltzes are not technically difficult dance, and they are set to lighthearted, easily accessible music. It is a dance filled with swift gliding turns and a smooth gliding beat. A dance is said to bring two people closer together, as it did in Theodore Roethke’s “My Papa’s Waltz”. Roethke’s poem has many similarities to his own life, and is a autobiographical story of his relationship with his father. This poem is a four stanza poem in iambic tritameter with a rhyme scheme of abab,cdcd,efef,ghgh. The theme of “My Papa’s Waltz” paints a picture of a memorable dance between father and son. The structure of the poem mimics an actual pace of the “waltz”. Throughout the poem you are torn between choosing sides. The young child in this poem is Theodore Roethke, reminiscing about his relationship with his father. This relationship falls on both sides, playful and strict, as a father figure should.
