In Raymond Carvers short story Cathedral one is immediately lead to believe this is a story about a man dealing with his own ignorance and prejudice. Although this presumption would be an accurate assessment the author misleads us into thinking that the characters bias is towards blind people. However after examining deeper you see his hatred is actually for the man who poses a threat to all that is important to him. His marriage, an impressive edifice which he yearns to protect. Cathedral is redefined over and over in Carvers short story, as well as serving as a metaphor for just about every aspect of these peoples lives.
The narrator, at first is portrayed as a bigot who has many stereotypical ideas about his wifes blind friend Robert. However, when Robert comes to visit you soon realize that the narrator doesnt dislike him necessarily because......
