Hobbes and Plato's views on justice Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The idea of justice is a direct correlation with conceptions of a just society. Every philosopher with their idea on a just society has their own definition of justice. Justice is a loaded concept with different aspects to think about. How it relates to the individual and how it relates to the society are the two main focuses of most definitions. Individual justice is going to contrast from societies justice because they both serve different purposes for the community. Individual justice is dependent upon the ideal virtues of man. Socrates believes there are four main virtues a just man must possess. They are wisdom, courage, temperance, and justice. Wisdom is defined as the individual governed by his or her own reasoning, courage is simple the ability to remember what is good for you, and temperance a basic self-control of your appetites or desires. Individual justice is according to Socrates, different parts of the soul doing the right thing, where reason rules over appetite with the existence of spirit.
