Madness in Our Media Robert P. Snow once said, “It is no exaggeration…to say that we live presently in a media culture.” Every individual is influenced by the mass communication process. Those programs in the media have the power to exploit information that can persuade the masses to have certain beliefs. Mental Illness, for example, is seen in a negative light according to the media creating trepidation and fear in the viewer. Inaccurate images of the mentally ill in the media lead to misconceptions and false stereotypes creating negative mind-sets and confusion towards individuals affected with mental illnesses. The world spends a great deal of their time in front of a television set. They get their news, current events, and their entertainment all in one little box. Throughout the history of television, mental illness has been depicted as “different, dangerous, and laughable”(Wahl, 1995, p.87).
