This book is about the hardships of living near the frontline during WWI. Paul
Baumer and his comrades were naive when they joined the army during high school. The war made them change the way they viewed their nationalism and patriotism to
Germany. Pauls generation was known as the lost generation because of how many young people died during the war. Paul made the decision to join the war because he wanted to been seen as a hero in his society. The consequence of this decision resulted with Paul and his friends being challenged emotionally. They looked at the war as a way to be important and respected. In the end all the war ended up doing was killing them. This is explained in the quote This book is to be neither an accusation nor a confession, and least of all an adventure, for death is not an adventure to those who stand face to face with it. It will try simply to tell of a generation of men who, even though they may have escaped shells, were destroyed by the war.
Soldiers like Paul and his comrades relied on their primal or animal like instinct......
