Oedipus Rex and the Human Entity Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

“All the generations of mortal men add up to nothing!” So says the chorus after the abominable crimes of Oedipus are exposed, using Oedipus as an exaggerated example of all mankind. However, in Oedipus Rex, Sophocles presents a more complex view of humanity, namely depicting man’s rashness and decency, as well as challenging stances on autonomy and subservience to the gods. The play has a variety of characters, each representing various facets of mankind. The chorus and Creon frequently display piety and prefer to lead moderate lives, providing a sharp contrast to the almost divine Teiresias and the “great and glorious” Oedipus, who live intensely extreme lives. Oedipus even lives outside the boundaries of universal order, hence his horrible punishments of blindness, exile and shameful infamy. The chorus represents the ‘typical’ citizens, subservient to the gods and demonstrating morality and common sense recurrently.
