"Jack the Ripper" Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

"Jack the Ripper" is the popular name given to a serial killer who killed a number of prostitutes in the East End of London in 1888. (Ryder, n.pg.). The Ripper may have been a sexual serial killer of a type all too common in the 1880s, but he was also bent on terrifying a city and making the whole world take notice of him by leaving his horribly mutilated victims in plain sight. (Ryder, n.pg.). To best understand the legend of Jack the Ripper we must first understand who he was, exactly what he did, and how the myth has grown. (Ryder, n.pg.). Although many people such as Frederick Deeming, David Cohen, and James Kelly were suspects to being Jack the Ripper, Joseph Barnett (1858-1926) was the closet the Metropolitan Police and the City of London Police Force got to unmasking who Jack the Ripper was. (Ryder, n.pg.). Joseph Barnett was born in 1858 and raised in 4 Hairbrain Court, less than a mile from the heart of Whitechapel. (Ryder, n.pg.).
