The book, The Color of Water, by James McBride is about his life and is also a tribute to his white mother. His mother's name is Ruth McBride and she immigrated from Poland with her Jewish family when she was only two years old and she marry a black man from North Carolina. James McBride was born into a chaotic family of twelve children and he did not have the time to ask questions about the racial barrier. James's mother did not want to discuss her painful past of her abusive father, Tateh, who pushed her poor sweet mother, Mameh around like property.
Ruth McBride arrived when she was young and spent most of her childhood traveling the country because her father was looking for a job as a rabbi. Eventually her father, Tateh, gave up hope of ever being a rabbi and he set up a shop in Suffolk, Virginia in the black part of town. The family store overcharged the customers and made racist comments. Tateh abused Ruth when she was a child and she was demanded to work in the family store while her father cheated on her mom in which the whole town practically knew about. Her childhood was ......
