A Poetic Legend Langston Hughes was born February 1, 1902 in Joplin, Missouri. His parents, who were bookkeepers, separated when he was very young. His father moved to Mexico, and his mother, who was always looking for jobs, was barely around so his grandmother had to raise him. They lived in Lawrence, Kansas until he was about 12 years old, when he moved to Illinois to be with his mother and stepfather. Later they moved to Ohio and while he was in high school he began writing poetry. He worked as a busboy at the Wardman Park Hotel in Washington, D.C. There he met Vachel Lindsay, a famous critic, whom he gave three of his poems to. Lindsay loved his work and Hughes gained some early recognition along with an audience. He won support from some important black intellectuals such as James Weldon Johnson and W.E.B. DuBois.
