Burke and Sebold: What is Beauty? The Webster’s Dictionary defines beauty as, “loveliness, grace: beautiful person or thing (26)”. What actually is beauty? Edmund Burke and Alice Sebold have two different views on the definition of beauty. Burke defines beauty as “…for the greater part, some quality in bodies acting mechanically upon the human mind by the intervention of the senses (Burke)”. Sebold defines beauty as acceptance from her family and males attained through her physical appearance and her image. Although Burke and Sebold do differ on small details, their overall message relates that society has designed the idea of beauty as the acceptance of females from the male gender. They have both adopted this in their own definitions of beauty. Burke has four different aspects to his definition of beauty: size, smoothness, variation, and delicateness. To Burke one of the most important aspects when determining if an object is beautiful, “is its extent or quantity (Burke)”.
