Genghis Khan By Stephen Smith When you think of the great world conquerors, who comes to mind? Do you think of Caesar and the Roman Empire? How about Alexander the Great and the Macedonians or Napoleon and the French? You probably neglected to think about Genghis Khan and the Mongol Empire. Under Genghis and his successors Ogodai and Kublai Khan, the Mongols ruled an empire the size of which Alexander, Caesar, and Napoleon could only dream about. At the height of their power, their empire covered almost all of Asia and extended into Europe. The Mongol people were not always such empire builders however. Before Genghis Khan was born, the Mongols were a warlike, nomadic people who tended their flocks and herds. When the grass was gone from where they were living, they packed up everything and moved their herds to new grazing land.1 Thus, the Mongols had no cities, and they lacked a written language. “They had history and traditions, legends and songs, and rules of behaviour which governed the way they lived, though not perfectly.”2 They had no central le......
