Prenatal exposure to alcohol can cause a wide variety of disorders. One of the most sever effects of drinking during pregnancy is Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS). Alcohol is the most common preventable cause of birth defects in the United States. It is estimated that 1 in every 750 babies are born with full blown FAS each year. FAS is a lifelong, physically and mentally disabling condition. FAS is characterized by abnormal facial features, growth deficiencies and central nervous system problems. This is a permanent condition with no cure, but can be prevented if a woman does not drink during her pregnancy. Alcohol is a teratogen, a substance known to be harmful to human development. When a pregnant mother consumes alcohol it enters her bloodstream and reaches the developing fetus by passing the placenta. In an unborn baby’s immature body, alcohol is broken down much slower than in an adult’s body. As a result, the blood alcohol level of the fetus can be even higher and can remain elevated longer than that of the mother’s blood. The presence of alcohol can impair optimal n......
