Websters Dictionary defines a symbol as something that stands for or suggests something else by reason of relationship, association, convention, or accidental resemblance. Similarly in Literature, symbols are used as a technique to represent something invisible or as something that stands for or suggests something else. Sophocles applied this brilliantly in one of his works of 425 B.C. entitled Oedipus the King.
As Greek Mythology would suggest, the Sphinx is characterized as a winged creature having the head and breasts of a woman and the body of a lion, who is noted for killing those passerbys who could not answer its riddle. The sphinx that sits on the rocks outside the gates of Thebes asks the same riddle of each passerby: What goes on four legs in the morning, two at noon and three at evening (1365)? Those who answered incorrectly were subjected to strangling. If one were to answer correctly, the sphinx would destroy itself.
