grendel's mother in Beowulf Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Beowulf is known to be one of the oldest poems in the English language. A work that is known for it’s greatness but does not even have an author to its name. Seamus Heaney’s translation of Beowulf creates a work that can be understood by today’s reader but maintains the ideas and culture of the Anglo-Saxon era. The hero of the story, Beowulf, comes to the defence of the hall of King Hrothgar when he hears of the attacks on the King’s hall. When Beowulf defeats the monster Grendel who is responsible for all the recent tragedy of the kingdom, a second foe presents herself. Grendel’s mother (the only “name” given to her) wants vengeance for the loss of her son. Although Grendel’s mother is said to be a descendent of Cain her actions are not evil but can be defended as she demonstrates human characteristics, has parallels with the hero Beowulf, and is representative of Anglo-Saxon culture. Grendel’s mother is seen to be the same as Grendel: a monster who is out to harm or murder the people of Hrothgar’s hall. However, the actions of Grendel’s mother are very human in natu......
