A Doll’s House Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In Norway during the 1800s public opinion of women’s role in society and the family were clearly defined. Ibsen, a famous playwright of that time, contradicted traditional beliefs on the status of females in society with his play A Doll‘s House. The main character Nora Helmer seems to have blindly followed the path which was outlined for her by males and society, living life as a “doll” to fulfill the will of others, obeying first her father, then her husband, Torvald, and society as a whole in her role as a female. By the easing into the ironic revealing of Nora’s rebellion, starting only with little white lies and ending with her departure from her husband, Ibsen presents the reader with the suspenseful uncovering of Nora’s inner self. As Nora discovers herself the reader is thrown into the exhilarant epiphanies which take place within her mind. Her discovery of her own free will serves as a testament of human rights for people ’round the world, past and present, men and women. In the opening scene Torvald voices his opinion on Nora’s apparent lack of understanding ......
