Jeff Bezos started Amazon.com in 1994. The idea was born after Bezos saw a site showing the number of internet users was growing by 2300 percent every month. Initially, the companys focus was selling books. Bezos settled on providing books because there was no clear leader in the industry.
The company had a good start. From the years 1995 to 2000, the companys sales increased from $.5 million to $2,762.0 million. Its customer base grew from 180,000 in 1996 to 20 million in 2000. That growth was spurred by the company expanding its offerings. In 1998, Amazon.com began offering not only books, but also music and videos. Over the next several years, the e-tailer continued to expand its product mix to include everything from toys and jewelry to software and electronics.
