The Brain Knows, What the Nose Knows Dr. Richard Axel from Columbia University made a startling discovery, about how there is a gene pool a very large gene pool at that in the genome, that encode receptors in the nose that detect odors and olfaction. This discovery has made a break though in the field of sensory biology. Dr. Axel says that studies on the evolution of sensory perception reveal the important fact that each species lives in its own unique sensory world of which other species may be partially or totally unaware. While other species are seeing the world in there unique ways such as bats using echo location and for Snakes having highly sensitive infrared imaging systems that target prey in the absence of visual information. Snakes have evolved a highly specialized sense apparatus called the pit organ, which detects heat from emitted infrared irradiations. Humans don’t have this organ we rely mostly on or sight.
