PETY GODS In the Greek world, Gods played a key role in every Greek’s life. It didn’t matter whether you were a peasant or a king, everyone feared the Gods. For that reason, people believed that the Gods controlled their lives and their fate. Fate is a word that gives people a wide range of emotions. Some people could care less about the meaning of the word and believe that they carve their own paths in the road of life. While others, like the Greeks, believed that fate was ruled their lives and that they have no control over when they will die. In Book 2 the men of Greece make haste in an effort to sail home. “And now they might have won their journey home, the men of Argos fighting the will of fate, yes, if Hera had not alerted Athena…”(2.181) So the Greeks do believe in fate, and in their culture, fate takes the form of three Gods called Atropos, Lachesis, and Clotho. The Illiad does not mention much about fate and how it works, but in lecture Dr. Thomas did talk about how the three fates have spun each person a thread of life.
