The Perfect Dictatorship - Nathanial Hawthorne “The Birthmark” Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The Perfect Dictatorship Control by definition means to hold in restraint. Being held back from what they can be and to control who they will be. In either case, control should not be a dictatorship but a leadership. Nevertheless, dictatorship was evident in both of Nathanial Hawthorne’s short stories “The Birthmark” and “Rappaccini’s Daughter”. Thus Hawthorn argues that the dictatorship encouraged by both males in the stories was from their love of science and their masculine control which takes the form of ownership. This, in turn, clouds their thoughts and they do take into account the well being of there loved ones. A conflict exists between the two, the love of science and their wife’s, however in “The Birthmark” Aylmer, the male figure in the story fights a constant battle between his love of science and the love of his wife, "it was not unusual for the love of science to rival the love of a woman, in its depth and absorbing energy" (Hawthorne 84), Aylmer is recognized as a man of great intellect who could love his wife more by combining the two loves of his lif......
