How is love seen according to Sappho’s Poems Sappho is a poet of ancient Greece that was born on the island of Lesbos. It’s been understood that her date of birth as well as her death is unknown. Women on the island of Lesbos lived a luxury life. Their garment as well their surroundings were very rich and prosperous. Aside from writing numerous amounts of poems, she might have had other occupations as well. In one of her poems she complains to her mother that she can’t focus on her weaving because she is so “horny”. From that statement we can infer that she might have been a weaver. She also might have held other occupations such as priestess, sacred whore, an athlete, or a fashion designer (she designed a garment called the chlamys). She might have taken part in all these job titles at a one point of time in her life (sacred texts). Christians burned most of her books in the year 380 A.D. by Pope Gregory Nazianzen.
