Nature verses Nurture The nature verses nurture debate has been causing controversy for centuries. It is a debate about how we become who we are. Although everyone is an individual in there own way, there are also recognisable similarities. So are we shaped by our genetic makeup and cannot be changed? Or does the environment in which we grow and socialise shape our human characteristics. Both sides of the argument are difficult to prove decisively. Although it hasn’t stopped many from trying! The nature side of the debate argues that our personality and intelligence are genetically inherited, therefore cannot be altered. There are some reasons for believing that genetics play a large part in person intelligence. There have been huge studies into whether geniuses run in the family. In 1884 Sir Francis Galton was one of the first people to write about “Hereditary genius” the paper expressed his view that geniuses seemed to run in families.
