Same-Sex Marriage Is A Civil Rights Issue
America prides itself in the idea of equal treatment for all. But, it is still only that- an idea. Homosexuals are a part of American society, yet they do not have the same civil liberties as heterosexuals. As of 2004 in the United States of America, same-sex marriages are legally recognized only in the state of Massachusetts. Outside of Massachusetts, Vermont is the only U.S. state to offer same-sex couples all of the state-level rights and benefits of heterosexual couples. Vermont does not use the word "marriage", however, but calls such unions civil unions. Civil unions do not, however, provide the federal-level rights, benefits and protections that come with a civil marriage license, nor will they necessarily be recognized in states that have no civil union law. California and New Jersey's domestic partnership laws provide similar benefits, but both stop short of full civil unions, much less marriage.
