Things Fall Apart Essay Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

‘Things Fall Apart’, by Chinua Achebe has many aspects which are the basis for a postcolonial novel. The novel deals with colonization and its aftermath and looks at the critique of imperialism along with social introspection. As a western we may judge the African society as primitive or undeveloped as if we helped shaped their society. Their traditions and customs may be seen as odd or indifferent but we need to remember it’s their culture and way of life. To start off we see Okonkwo being quite wealthy due to his status of wives and children. In this novel, the people of Umuofia live in a polygamous society, taken up by polygon which means one man has several wives. A man’s wealth in that age and society was measured in the number of children he had. Okonkwo was the bearer of three wives and eight children, each wife had their own hut. We see a sense of tradition in the practice of sharing nuts and palm-wine between clan members to the praying of ancestral spirits.
