John Donne’s “A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning” is a poem from the speaker to a woman that he loves. The speaker must leave, while the woman that he loves must remain at home. This poem is written to provide the speaker’s lover with a type of reassurance that their love will remain strong. The theme of this poem is that the speaker wants to assure his lover that their love will remain strong, even though he is leaving. He uses 2 similes, and 2 metaphors to encourage his lover that the feelings they have for each other will survive their temporary separation. The first simile that is employed to comfort his lover is comparing their love to the element gold. Gold is a representation in contemporary society as well as when this poem was written of excellence, and prosperity. The speaker says “Our two souls, therefore, which are one…endure not yet a breach, but an expansion” (21-23). Gold is a very malleable substinance. When hammered it will spread out, and become very fine, it can even become thinner that a piece of paper. The speaker uses this metal to compare his voyage wit......
