When I lived in Russia, I remember the study of Judaism was still a punishable offense. Before the fall of Communism, and the new freedoms it brought I did not even know that Judaism existed. Only later when my mother and I migrated to America my mom opened my eyes by telling me that I was Jewish. At that point I formed both religious and national new identity.
My fathers religion is Christianity and my mothers is Jewish. That makes me half Jewish and half Christian, but according to Judaism religion is dictated by ones mother. This means that I am Jewish, but I didnt discover it until my mom and I moved to a free country. From the day my parents decided to baptize me, I thought of myself as a good Christian who went to church and practiced my religion daily. My parents chose Christianity as my religion because of all the struggles Jews had went through in the country I grew up in.
