The Divine Comedy of Dante Alighieri: The Retrospective and Prospective Gaze of Purgatorio XXVII. In The Divine Comedy of Dante Alighieri, Purgatorio XXVII acts as a bridge between the Seventh Terrace of Purgatory and the threshold of the Earthly Paradise. While the position of the canto looks forward to the coming of Beatrice and to the promise of new experiences in Paradiso, the presence of narrative echoes within the text, invites the reader to recall the journey of Inferno and to reflect on the protagonist’s achievements in Purgatorio. During the ritualistic crossing of the fire, the dream of Leah, and Virgil’s farewell speech, the poet uses textual reminiscences and foreshadowing to not only characterize the underlying structure of the canto, but to also establish a sense of continuity between the past and present. While the canto’s progressive focus mirrors the protagonist’s movement towards fulfillment and the completion of his education, the retrospective elements encourage the reader to actively reflect on the past cantos and to use this knowledge as a foundation......
