Charles Dickens gives his characters opportunities for transformation through the resurrection of their lives In A Tale of Two Cities. Dickens represents resurrection and transformation not only personally through the characters but as well as England and France as a society. Lucie Manette holds responsibility for the resurrections of Sydney Carton, Charles Darnay and her father Dr. Manette's lives. Lucie is their stimulus to help them recover from their desperate conditions because of her underlying dedication. In turn, Carton gives up his own life in order to save a friend. The lives of Sydney Carton, Dr. Manette, and Charles Darnay are all resurrected at times when hope is lost. Resurrection experienced by the characters makes evident the power of love and determination. Mr. Lorry's dream, in which he is “digging” a man out of his grave, foreshadows the resurrection of Dr. Manette, from his unjust imprisonment and return to society.
